The Island

White sand, blue skies and palm-fringed beaches on your tropical paradise island

Picture your perfect island paradise (top left in image above) – white sandy beaches, palm trees, laid-back beach parties, and stunning sunsets – and you’ll find it all on Gili Trawangan. The Gili islands were pretty much undiscovered by tourists until 30 years ago, but as backpackers took home tales of this tropical paradise, their popularity began to grow. The largest of the three islands, just a 20-minute boat ride from Lombok, the pace of life is slow on Gili T. There are no cars and motorbikes here - horse-drawn carts or cidomos will take you wherever you need to go, but the island is small enough to get around by bike or on foot. Most of the action is centred around a 2km stretch of beachfront just 400m from Pondok Santi, and if you want to party, this is the place to go. The bars take it in turns to host the nightly party, and there’s always a beach barbecue on the go. Shops on the beachfront cater for most of your needs, and there’s a produce market which arrives by boat every morning – even if you don’t plan on buying, it’s worth going along for a look!
